Revision to state law allows county to use road fund for marine-related projects

In practice, the change in definition will allow the county to spend money from its road fund on maintaining, improving and replacing a variety of marine-related facilities, including Odlin dock (No. 14 on Public Works' 2015-20 transportation improvement program, Obstruction Pass boat launch, and Hunter Bay dock and boat ramp (No. 6 on the transportation improvement program).

The only positives to junk mail are that apparently thousands of low-level jobs are being created and the post office is being kept alive. The political parties and the "causes" —who even opens the envelopes?

For the first quarter of 2015, after years of recession reporting, I can truly say that the county, as a whole, has recovered to pre-recession levels of cash. Of course, general fund expenditures have gone up almost 30 percent since 2007, but at least we’re close to being back on par.

Born in Bay City, Mich., second in a family of nine children, LaPorte migrated to San Juan Island more than 30 years ago. The father of three daughters and a foster son, and grandfather of six, he made a living in a variety of occupations over the years and gravitated with ease into the arena of local politics.
