The the biggest source of spills so far in the Sound has not been tankers and freighters, but small recreational and commercial vessels. Small spills, such as oily bilge discharge, account for 75 percent of the oil dumped into local waters over the last 10 years.

Bernie Day 71, a resident of Friday Harbor for 26 years, passed unexpectedly on July 3, 2016 during a five-week cruise to Desolation Sound and the Broughton Islands, British Columbia, Canada. She was born in Walsenburg, Colo. on Aug. 28, 1944. The daughter of Julia and Charles John Simansky. Bernie grew up in Erie and Westminster Colorado and graduated from Westminster High School in Colorado. Following high school, she started a career in various administration roles at several technology companies and later as a senior administrator at Western Electric and AT&T Bell Laboratories. In New Jersey, she started a technology value-added reseller (VAR) company D&D CompuTech, Inc. and enjoyed its rise in the AT&T VAR program ranks.

Saturday, July 23, from 1-4 p.m. Roche Harbor Trails: Mike Buettell, volunteer trail builder and mountain climber, will lead us on a hike through the extensive trail system next to the Roche Harbor Resort. Buettell and his group of volunteers are proud of the trail building and maintenance, and you will want to return and explore on your own. Meet and park at the intersection of Roche Harbor and West Valley Roads. Distance: 3.5 miles. Rating: Moderate on gentle trails. Dogs on leashes are welcome. For more information:

Helping the islands’ disabled over come isolation

The San Juan County United Way has been instrumental in assisting folks who experience a developmental disability. They have awarded Washington Vocational Services a grant for the last three years, supporting WVS to plan activities which help these men and women experience less isolation in the San Juans.

Penn Cove Orca Capture Anniversary Commemoration

Orca Network's commemoration of the Penn Cove orca captures of 1970 includes an on the water ceremony as well as a special screening of the documentary Lolita: Spirit in the Water with guest appearances by the creators of the film.
